Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu won the Oscar for best director for The Revenant at the 88th Academy Awards, its second straight after winning in the same category in 2015 by Birdman. Iñárritu was the favorite for the award, despite strong competition from the likes of Tom McCarthy by Spotlight and Adam McKay for The Big Short.

Based on a novel by Michael Punke, The Revenant stars Leonardo DiCaprio as frontiersman Hugh Glass 19th century, which was given for dead in the desert after a bear attack. The film was supposedly a grueling production, with Iñárritu suggesting that it may have made "an irresponsible decision" in the way he went about it. However, The Revenant turned out to be a box office hit, grossing more than $ 380 million worldwide to date.

The film has already proved a magnet for awards director, with Iñárritu collect the BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Director, as well as reliable regarding the prize Directors Guild of America Oscar.
