Johnson & Johnson <JNJ.N> was ordered by a jury of the state of Missouri to pay $ 72 million in damages to the family of a woman whose death from ovarian cancer was related to use of the base of talc company powdered baby shower and shower for several decades.
In a decision made public on Monday night, the jury in the Circuit Court of St. Louis awarded Family Jacqueline Fox $ 10 million actual damages and $ 62 million in punitive damages, according to lawyers family and the courts.
The verdict is the first by a US jury damages over claims, lawyers said.
Johnson & Johnson is facing lawsuits in an effort to increase sales, any failed for decades to warn consumers that their products based on talc may cause cancer. About 1,000 cases have been filed in the courts of the state of Missouri, and another 200 in New Jersey.
Fox, who lived in Birmingham, Alabama, said she used baby powder and shower to shower for feminine hygiene for over 35 years before being diagnosed three years ago with ovarian cancer. She died in October at age 62.
