We're still months of Fourth of July fireworks, but people statewide celebrating independence on Wednesday. This is because March 2 is the Day of Independence of Texas actually. It has been 180 years since the leaders of Texas seceded from Mexico.

holiday marks the date when the Declaration of Independence of Texas after the Texas Revolution was adopted. It was signed the next day and the Republic of Texas was formed. March 2, also happens to be Sam Houston Day, recognizing birthday soldier and politician Sam Houston, who recovered from Texas to a victory over Mexico in the battle of San Jacinto. That victory ensured the independence of Texas.

George Childress is credited with drafting the Declaration of Independence of Texas, with the help of other committee members.

When the document was approved and signed by delegates representing all the 59 settlements in Texas, five copies of it were made. Those were delivered to the towns of Bexar, Brazoria, Goliad, Nacogdoches and San Felipe. Officials ordered another 1,000 copies to be distributed as flyers.

The Republic of Texas became part of the United States less than 10 years later. Texas is the only state to enter the country by a treaty, rather than annexation. Independence Day Texas is still recognized as an official holiday throughout the state. Most state government offices remain open, however, with at least partial staff.

There is an official celebration planned for this weekend near Houston, but people in the rest of the state - including here in North Texas - are taking advantage of the day to share why they are proud to be from Texas. "I'm proud because Texans are friendly, hard working, enjoy the natural things in life," said Regenia Ojukwu on Facebook. "We have passion for people and things most people take for granted."

So, take a moment Wednesday to do something that is truly Texan. Perhaps you can relax with a refreshing Dr Pepper. Bonus points if they enjoy a Whataburger food. Or drive around and avoid the armadillos. (These are small official state animal.) Or enjoy some topaz jewelry. (It is the official state gemstone.) Whatever you do, just make sure it is done with some good ol 'Texas pride you.
