Create a WiFi network that uses 10,000 times less power

In the new era of connected devices, the wireless network has become an indispensable platform with many advantages. But it also has disadvantages: it consumes a lot of energy, which makes the battery dies and you have devices that can not integrate.

However, a team of researchers from the University of Washington in the US has found the solution to this problem.

Scientists have developed a new WiFi technology with a much higher than the current energy efficiency. The new wireless network platform uses 10,000 times less power than current WiFi components, which allow this type of connection forms part of a much wider range of devices.

The technology, which has been called Passive WiFi, uses a system of environmental backscatter allows devices to interact and communicate.

With this solution, the devices exchange information via reflection or absorption signals, a technique incredibly reduces power consumption. The secret is that the system selectively reflects the incoming waves, building a new signal while absorbs energy.

"We want to see if we can get a WiFi transmission with little energy use," says Shyam Gollakota, member of the research.

As a result, the new type of WiFi needs a lot of energy 1,000 times lower than that of other platforms low-power wireless communication such as Bluetooth Low Energy and Zigbee.
